Granta Backbone Network

The Granta Backbone Network (GBN) is the University of Cambridge’s privately owned optical fibre network. Since 1992 the University has developed and run the GBN to deliver high speed network services to over 40 colleges, institutions and research bodies linked to the University. It currently totals over 75km of duct network and is growing continually to meet the University’s needs.

Initially, the GBN was installed within University- and College-owned land, but in order to expand, more of the network now needs to be installed within the public highway, which is why Plant Protection needs to be considered. This is where LSBUD has been able to help.

GBN manager, Ritchie Carter, was pleased to be joining LSBUD’s membership, commenting “Joining LSBUD is a step in the right direction for me and the team. We’ll now be able to ensure the GBN has the necessary visibility to minimize the risk of network strikes, thus providing an extra level of protection for this key asset of the University’s estate.”

LSBUD welcomes our latest Member, Jurassic Fibre

Established in 2019, Jurassic Fibre is working with communities, councils, businesses and consumers to develop a new fibre to the premises network, bypassing the decades-old copper one that most homes and businesses still rely on for broadband and phone landlines in the South West. Jurassic Fibre started building its high speed fibre network in 2019 and already operates across East Devon.

As part of the Fern Trading Group, Jurassic Fibre has substantial funds available to deliver a world class fibre broadband network for the South West. They are planning to invest over £250m into building a fibre network in Devon, Dorset and Somerset, passing over 300,000 homes, making gigabit speeds a reality.

The LSBUD Helpdesk Team are available via email, telephone and online chat if you have any queries.
